Chess Buzz and the Coming Presidential Election

I'm not sure quite where to file this one ... but that's what miscellaneous is for ...

I was searching Yahoo! Buzz for any mention of chess today and I came across two articles.

1) An 11-in-1 Multi-Game Dining Room Table courtesy of Boing Boing Gadgets.

and ...

2) The humorous Vice President picks from io9.com

The following line concerning Lex Luthor gave me a chuckle ...
With his world renowned genius, Lex could single handedly organize the entire campaign while solving the energy crisis and defeating the world’s grandmasters in highly publicized chess tournaments... as long as Superman wasn't around to distract him.


My questions are as follows ...

  • Why is chess often associated with villainy? or is this association really made here?

  • Why is the term 'highly publicized' so important in the sentence? Is it just to emphasize public knowledge or is there deeper significance?

  • As a Marvel fan I'm deeply wounded that Lex is the only mentioned chess talent in the comic multi-verse. Why is Beast not nominated for candidacy? He'd make a great vice president and many times he has been spotted playing chess. ;-)
