Gothic Chess Tournament Report

Yesterday afternoon I played in the first $100 Gothic Chess Tournament that I was able to attend. Actually, I just heard about the weekly Monday tournaments last week so it was the first I even knew about. I'm pretty rusty at Gothic Chess but I did manage to make it to the final. Some chessplayers are outright hostile to variants but I invite all variants because I think we can learn more about chess through them. Anyway, here is my game from round one ...

*I tried playing through this game and was badly surprised. On move 38.Qc2 white takes its own piece. On move 41...Qxh2+ (which is check) the check indicator is missing and then white leaves their king under check.

What am I missing? How complex are the rules of gothic chess?

The capture has nothing to do with the rules of Gothic Chess and everything to do with the Javascript viewers understanding of ambiguous moves (the move 34.Ncxe1 is recorded but the viewer 'reads' it as Ng2xe1). This leads to the piece capture (which did not occur) and the en prise king (which also did not occur).

The same old “chess viewer” story re-surfaces under Gothic chess.
That’s why I call such viewers to be of “Barrel Organs” technology type.
A game displayed by them is a mere sequence of pictures and can be tweaked to show anything and everything. Maybe, we should tell Ed so that he can fix the viewer or the publisher or both.

I know first-hand that Ed is aware of this difficulty (and was aware some time ago). However, I do not believe he is/was aware that there are other options. Perhaps some friendly advice from a developer would carry a little more weight than us lowly pawns. ;-)

As for the viewers developer ... I haven't paid attention to what program is being used by gothic-chess.com to display games. But again, the words of a developer carry more weight. Worst case scenario - build a viewer that supports Gothic (or any other 10x8 variant for that matter). You know I'd use it whenever and wherever I can. 8-)

From a developer’s point of view we’ve done the hardest part. We isolated a bug in the software and pointed out a clear way of reproducing the situation. Moreover, you dissected the problem and found the real culprit – lack of understanding of ambiguous moves. Most developers will be happy to receive such a feedback. I feel that no further advice is necessary since the choice of software architecture was already made in the beginning of the project. I don’t know enough about their (Gothic’s) specific requirements and expectations and I don’t want to speculate.
